State QSO parties are contests that focus on one particular state or area. Nearly every state has a QSO party, and there are a number of regional QSO parties that focus on one call area, such as the Seventh Area QSO Party or one geographic region, like New England.

Object of State QSO Parties

The primary objective of state QSO parties is to contact as many stations in the target area as possible. It is possible to enter as an:

  • In State Participant

A station operating from within the target area. Example: In the Florida QSO Party, a station operating from within Florida is an "in state" participant.

  • Out of State Participant

A station operating from outside the target area. Example: In the Florida QSO Party, a station operating from California is an "out of state" participant.

In state participants are generally allowed to contact in state and out of state participants, while out of state participants are only allowed to contact stations within the target area.

Rovering

Many states have so many counties (such as Texas) it would be impossible to activate all the counties during their QSO party. The organizers of most QSO parties have added a category called the "Rover" category. Participants in this category usually go mobile and try to activate as many counties as they can. The rules allow a rover to start a new log when they enter a new county. Rover stations can generate large QSO totals, because they can work stations they worked in a previous county again. They also generate pileups on them when they enter a new county because many times they are the only station active from that county. See File:SEDXC Mobile.pdf for tips on mobile contesting and rovering.
