Randy has suggested that we need to make a fundamental philosophical decision. Are we going to follow the Wikipedia model, where we allow the full gamut of editing with the idea of seeking to make each entry as complete, current and accurate as possible, or are we aiming for more of a "living book" approach, where individual article remain pretty much as they were when uploaded.

I guess my preference would be for a hybrid approach. This is what I suggested to Randy in an e-mail

"I have been wrestling with exactly this issue. All my instincts favor the living book, with a real table of contents, a little like the beginning now on the main page. On the other hand, don't we want to encourage people to suggest improvements to other people's stuff? Maybe the way to do it is to give credit to the original article at the top of each page, making it clear that the contributor has the primary right to supervise that page's development and (hopefully) enhancement.

I think I'll try to shift this discussion to the discussion page of the main page, to see if that offers a better way to have a multi-party discussion."

It seems to me this will be a mixed site. I guess I envision a sort of online group edited "Contest Cookbook". Some pages will be Wikipedia like and open to total editing and copying and other pages will be closed and copyrighted. I can argue for and against this - I have mixed feelings. I would prefer that it all be open and free and open to edits. --K5tr 21:40, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

The Main Page can't be editted. "Contest Compendium" should be "Contesting Compendium", as used elsewhere. --Eric K3NA 03:14, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Eric, I don't think the floating boxes work on the main page. They divert important marketing content to a place where people are unlikely to see it. we want to make a pitch to new contesters as well as old ones.

Pete: OK. Reverting to original format. Eric K3NA 13:25, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

The floating rationale was to prevent the material at the top of the page from pushing the "news" below the viewable space on a browser. Maybe the "news" should be in the floating box! Eric K3NA 13:27, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

That's a great idea! Can you try that for the New Today heading?
